Vintage Ragan.  Prom night, 1994.  I was voted “Most Unique” of my graduating class. In Texas, “Most Unique” is a euphemism for “Gayest.”  The term “gay” was only mentioned when bullies used the term as an object of derision.  Certainly, Tennessee’s misguided, hateful “Don’t Say Gay” legislation isn’t directed at schoolhouse terrors who spit the word “faggot” into the kids’  faces.  Calling a kid faggot in an attempt to police his presentation of self= ignored and, worse, okay in most schools.  Letting students know that gay people positively contribute to history, literature, and science= dangerous.  Consider the paradox.
